\u00a0J<\/span>es\u00fas Torres was born in Zaragoza on 15 July 1965. He received his academic training at the Conservatorio Superior de M\u00fasica de Madrid. At the same time, he attended several musical analysis courses with Luis de Pablo. Between 1986 and 1988, he studied composition with Francisco Guerrero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

His catalogue comprises 143 compositions, including twenty orchestral works, among them seven concertos: for piano, accordion, violin, percussion and clarinet, harpsichord, as well as Transfiguraci\u00f3n<\/em>, double concerto for cello, accordion and string orchestra. He has also written chamber works for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. One of his most prominent interests is the setting of texts to music, with his ongoing engagement with the poetry of Vicente Aleixandre standing out in particular\u201444 poems set to music\u2014as well as works by authors such as San Juan de la Cruz, Jorge Manrique, Luis de G\u00f3ngora, Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo, Gustavo Adolfo B\u00e9cquer, Rub\u00e9n Dar\u00edo, Juan Ram\u00f3n Jim\u00e9nez, Antonio Machado, Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez, Juan Eduardo Cirlot, Leopoldo Panero, Antonio Carvajal and Alejandro Duque Amusco.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

His music has been performed at festivals and concert series in numerous \ncountries, including the Biennale di Venezia, Musica 99 Strasbourg, \nMusikfestspiele Saar, Ars Musica in Brussels, Iberm\u00fasica, Radio France\u2019s \nPr\u00e9sences 2000, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, the Kuhmo Festival, the \nISCM Festival (Copenhagen and Bucharest), the Festival de Alicante, and \nthe UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers (2001 and 2008).<\/p>

It has also been performed at PRIX Italia, the Royal Academy in London, \nPrague Premieres 2008, the Festival Puentes in Mexico, the Festival \nLatinoamericano de Caracas, Gare du Nord in Basel, Konzert Theater Bern, \nWiener Konzerthaus, Ultraschall Berlin, the Sound Ways Festival in St \nPetersburg, the Lucerne Festival, the Foro Internacional de M\u00fasica Nueva \nManuel Enr\u00edquez, the Quincena Musical Donostiarra, the Festival \nInternacional de Santander, the Festival Internacional de M\u00fasica y Danza \nde Granada, the Transart Festival, the Marv\u00e3o Festival and the \nSchwetzinger Festspiele, among others.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u00a0<\/span>He has received numerous awards, including the Premio SGAE (Madrid, \n1992), the Gaudeamus Prize (Amsterdam, 1995), the Valentino Bucchi \nPrize (Rome, 1997), the Premio Reina Sof\u00eda (Barcelona, 1999), the \nMillennium Chamber Players Prize (Chicago, 2008), and the Premio \nNacional de M\u00fasica (2012). He was composer-in-residence with the Joven \nOrquesta Nacional de Espa\u00f1a during the 1998\u20131999 season. Since 2002, all \nof his works have been published by Trit\u00f3 Edicions in Barcelona and are \nfeatured in numerous recordings released by labels such as Naxos, Kairos, \nIBS Classical and Trit\u00f3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Among his works are: Sinfon\u00eda<\/em> (2005), for the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de RTVE; Faust<\/em> (2008), orchestral music for the screening of F. W. Murnau\u2019s 1926 silent film, premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid; Evocaci\u00f3n de Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez<\/em> (2010), for soprano, choir and orchestra, composed for the centenary of the poet\u2019s birth and first performed at the Festival de Alicante; Apocalipsis<\/em> (2011), for Gregorian choir, double choir and instrumental ensemble, with texts by Saint John, commissioned by the 50th Semana de M\u00fasica Religiosa de Cuenca; Libro de los secretos<\/em> (2003\/2011), commissioned by the Fundaci\u00f3n Autor for the OBC and premiered at L\u2019Auditori in Barcelona; Concierto para viol\u00edn y orquesta<\/em> (2011), commissioned by the Fundaci\u00f3n BBVA and premiered at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid; the large choral cycle Aleixandre-Coros<\/em> begun in 2014; Sonetos<\/em> (2014-2015), for choir and orchestra, commissioned by the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de Espa\u00f1a; Fol\u00edas de Espa\u00f1a<\/em> (2015), commissioned by the Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Castilla y Le\u00f3n; Dos poemas de Antonio Carvajal<\/em> (2016), commissioned by the Festival M\u00fasica Sur, and Malague\u00f1a ausente<\/em>, commissioned by the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tr\u00edo Arb\u00f3s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2015, he received one of the Becas Leonardo from the Fundaci\u00f3n BBVA for the composition of two new orchestral works. In addition, he was awarded the 8th AEOS\/Fundaci\u00f3n BBVA Prize for his orchestral work Tres pinturas velazque\u00f1as<\/em>. He was appointed composer-in-residence of the CNDM for the season 2017\/2018. Magazine Sibila<\/em>. Issue No. 52 (October 2017) of Sibila: Revista de Arte, M\u00fasica y Literatura was dedicated to him, accompanied by the release of a monographic CD. In 2019, he was appointed composer-in-residence of the Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica Ciudad de Zaragoza. The Teatro Real commissioned his first opera, Tr\u00e1nsito<\/em>, based on the homonymous work by Max Aub, which premiered during the 2020\/2021 season at the Teatro Real.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica del Principado de Asturias, together with the Fundaci\u00f3n SGAE, commissioned him to compose Final<\/em> for voice and orchestra, based on poems by Alejandro Duque Amusco. Likewise, the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and the BRANDNEU 2022 Organ Festival in Kassel commissioned his first work for organ, Introspecci\u00f3n<\/em>. The Sociedad Espa\u00f1ola de la Guitarra commissioned him to compose a new work for guitar, Himno a la tristeza<\/em>, for publication in the magazine Roseta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Teatro Real in Madrid commissioned his second opera, Tejas verdes<\/em>, which premiered in 2025. That same year, five new vocal works were premiered: Coplas<\/em> (based on texts by Jorge Manrique), Oda<\/em> (Vicente Aleixandre), Tres poemas de Tejas verdes<\/em> (Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez), Cantares de Machado<\/em> and Eternidades<\/em> (Juan Ram\u00f3n Jim\u00e9nez). Su primera \u00f3pera, Tr\u00e1nsito, recibi\u00f3 en 2024 el Premio Impulso a la Mejor Propuesta de Nueva Creaci\u00f3n L\u00edrica en la VII edici\u00f3n de los Premios \u00d3pera XXI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2025, he completed a new work for ensemble, Concertante<\/em>, commissioned by the CNDM to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Manuel de Falla and the 30th anniversary of the Tr\u00edo Arb\u00f3s. The work will be premiered in 2026 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sof\u00eda in Madrid. In December 2026, Tr\u00e1nsito<\/em> will be performed again as part of the 2026\/2027 season of \u00d3pera de Tenerife.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2026, he completed a new orchestral work, Memorial<\/em>, commissioned by the Staatskapelle Dresden to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven. Its premiere is scheduled for April 2027, as part of a tour that will visit Dresden (Semperoper), Vienna (Wiener Musikverein), Barcelona (Palau de la M\u00fasica Catalana), Valencia (Palau de la M\u00fasica), and Madrid (Auditorio Nacional de M\u00fasica). His latest compositions include Incantatio<\/em>, for alto saxophone and piano, commissioned by INAEM for Ismael Arroyo, Lux in tenebris<\/em>, an accordion duo composed for I\u00f1aki Alberdi and Marko Sevarlic, and Silente<\/em>, for voice, vibraphone, harp, and piano, based on a poem by Aleixandre.<\/p>
